Seahawks inactives versus Ravens: Secondary could be a mess
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks announced their inactives versus the Ravens week 7 and they mean one thing: Seattle’s secondary could be a huge disaster.
The Seahawks always have seven inactive players for each game. Almost always a 12 should be hoping the players making up the inactive list simply are rookies who don’t play much or backup players who play even less. On Sunday against the Ravens, however, Seattle will be without three key pieces of their 2019 success.
The worst part of all this is that the safety position for the Seahawks is completely not that. Seattle will be without veteran Bradley McDougald (back spasms) who is the communicator deep in the secondary. Without McDougald, Seattle will have to rely on rookie Marquise Blair, who will be making his first start. Rookies make a lot of mental mistakes so Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson could have a field day against Seattle.
12s might have faith that second-round draft pick Blair might be really good. But I ask you: What has he done to show you he can be good this Sunday?
Seattle will also be without safety Lano Hill. Hill isn’t a full-time starter but has experience and has been decent when he has played. Now, without Hill and McDougald, Seattle is really thin at the position. Should Blair make mistakes, there isn’t a lot Seattle can do to replace him.
The Seahawks will also be without left tackle Duane Brown (biceps) again. George Fant has played pretty well in Brown’s absence and will need to be just as good protecting Russell Wilson this week too.
Defensive end Ziggy Ansah, always a threat to be hurt, is out as well. Ansah is dealing with an ankle injury. He hasn’t done much this season so far so the Seahawks might not miss him much. Of the two offseason acquisitions at defensive end, Jadeveon Clowney would be the much more preferable player to try to re-sign this coming offseason over Ansah.
At least defensive tackle Jarran Reed returns this week from suspension. Hopefully he will releive some of the attention paid to Clowney. Seattle needs Reed to play well immediately or Seattle will lose to the Ravens.
