Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson is still the MVP favorite
By John Buhler
Despite falling at home last week to the Baltimore Ravens, Russell Wilson remains the favorite to win NFL MVP through the first seven weeks of the season.
The Seattle Seahawks might have suffered a tough second loss on the year to the Baltimore Ravens at home in Week 7. However, they are still in great shape to make it back to the NFC playoffs, thanks in large part to the outstanding play of superstar quarterback and team leader Russell Wilson.
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at the early NFL MVP race and assess who is on top. From the looks of it, it’s fair to say that Wilson is the award’s front-runner, and rightfully so (15:08).
“Russell Wilson is going to be the MVP, in my opinion,” said Verderame. “It’s one game, he didn’t have a good game. Fine. So be it. I think he’s the MVP. If I had to rank them, I’d go Wilson No. 1, [Aaron Rodgers] after that.”
Verderame also thinks Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey should be in the mix for NFL MVP, too. While Schwartz likes Aaron Rodgers as his front-runner and Verderame has Rodgers No. 2 for him at this juncture, both guys have differing opinions on Lamar Jackson. Schwartz thinks he’s in the MVP mix, while Verderame isn’t as quick to jump on “Action Jackson”.
Overall, it feels like Wilson and Rodgers are near the top for the award through seven weeks. This could all change, as Patrick Mahomes was in the mix up until last week when he dislocated his kneecap. We have no idea who’ll be the 2019 NFL MVP at the end of the day. That being said, Wilson feels like the front-runner. A down game against the solid Ravens shouldn’t hurt his case.
Here are a few other topics that were discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:
