Seahawks say so long to Gary Jennings again but say hello to Phil Haynes
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks released Gary Jennings on Tuesday. Seattle tried to release him earlier in the year. But they now have Phil Haynes available.
Seahawks receiver Gary Jennings has been expendable since the day he was drafted. Seattle seemingly tried to release their rookie receiver previously this year but then changed their minds. Where Jennings value really lay was in his skill of being a healthy scratch every week. Now he is gone. That means Seattle will need to healthy-scratch someone else instead.
I don’t know this for sure and it is completely my opinion (that is what FanSided pays me for) but Jennings being a healthy scratch as a fourth round draftee probably means he showed up to camp either out of shape or with a not-great work ethic. Then, as soon as the Seahawks added Josh Gordon, it was hooray! A good reason to release Jennings.
Seattle does not seem to have a need at receiver. Tyler Lockett is having a great season. Rookie D.K. Metcalf is improving as the year goes on. Now Gordon has been added. Plus, David Moore catches an exciting pass every few games and Jaron Brown still exists on paper. Jennings might be good one day, but it won’t be with Seattle. Hopefully he won’t come back to haunt Seattle in years future.
Phil Haynes, though, might be a good guard for Seattle. Possibly as soon as next year. Starting guards D.J. Fluker and Mike Iupati weren’t signed for long term in what Seattle really wants to do financially so Haynes might be needed sooner. He showed promise in training camp.
Haynes might not play at all this year. He might supplant Jennings as a weekly healthy scratch. Either way, by 2022 Haynes will probably be a more valued member of the Seahawks than Jennings was ever going to be.
