On the Dan Patrick Show, Russell Wilson had a lot to say. In this clip, Wilson talks about preparation and my favorite topic, mental toughness.

Quarterback extraordinaire Russell Wilson discussed a veritable smorgasbord of topics on The Dan Patrick Show recently with the man himself, Dan Patrick. When you get a chance to talk with the man who should definitely be the league MVP, you don’t send in a backup. In this segment, Patrick asked Wilson about his approach to playing in every game, and it quickly moved to his mental preparation.

It turns out that along with a nutritionist, a physical therapist and other members of his performance team, Wilson employs a mental coach. Patrick zeroed in on this immediately, and I’m so glad he did. Trevor Moab is the man Wilson turns to week after week to hone his mental skills. Wilson and Moab have been working together for a decade now. No wonder Wilson is regarded as one of the game’s most cerebral quarterbacks.

Wilson brought the mental aspect of his game into perfect focus in this interview. 12s know just how bright Wilson is, but it’s still fun to get a deeper look into his mindset. Here’s just one example of how he approaches the game:

"“You think about trying to be successful and playing this game for a long period of time, for 10, 20 years. You’ve got to have your mind prepared. They’ll write about you one day positively and the next day it’ll be negative, so how do you stay sane? How do you stay focused on the mission? You gotta have what it takes.”"

I especially love this quote from Russell Wilson:”You don’t have to be sick to get better.” He goes on to speak in-depth about mental health, maintaining an even keel, basically things that apply to every walk of life, not just sports. It’s a great conversation, and you owe it to yourself to listen in:

Russell Wilson is rarely off his game mentally. I can’t say never, because we’ve all seen a few performances that just make you shake your head and wonder where they got the doppelganger. But 99 percent of the time, Wilson is 100 percent checked in. It’s a pleasure to get a small peek inside the mind of the ma who makes the Seahawks go.
