Seahawks defeat 49ers in a game that would never end
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks defeated the previously-undefeated 49ers in week 10 27-24 in overtime. Both teams made mistakes but also made great plays.
I am going to be honest. This quick recap was written and re-written and then re-written again by me in the last 30 minutes of the Seahawks victory over the 49ers in week 10. Seattle should have won, then should have lost, then could have tied and then finally, by the grace of all things holy, beat the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Monday night.
Neither team was perfect but the game may have been. Both teams played well enough to beat most other teams in the NFL. The officiating was terrible and missed several calls. For instance, on Russell Wilson’s touchdown pass to Jacob Hollister, the officials missed a 49ers hold on Tyler Lockett and also Hollister. These same officials calls a personal foul penalty on Mychal kendricks on a tackle where Kendricks grabbed the San Francisco players by the back of his jersey.
But enough about the refs; They continue to be awful and the NFL needs to address it very soon.
This victory for Seattle belonged to Russell Wilson but also to the Seahawks defense. Wilson threw his second interception of the season on an underthrown pass in overtime, but it was also a good play by 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Seattle’s maligned defense was most very good on Monday, though.
Jadeveon Clowney had five tackles, including a sack. He also had 5 quarterback hits. But most importantly, he scooped up a fumble and ran it into the endzone for a touchdown in the second quarter. But in week 10, Clowney had help.
Seattle had five sacks overall, four by the defensive line. For a unit that has been struggling to get pressure, Seattle hit 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo 10 times on Monday. Jarran Reed had his best game since returning from suspension supplying a lot on interior pressure, including 1.5 sacks.
Safety Quandre Diggs, in his first game as a Seahawk, has a huge hit on a poor 49ers receiver and an interception. Cornerback Shaquill Griffin had a game-saving pass break up on a deep sideline pass where he first seemed to get beat but used his speed to catch up.
Seattle wasn’t perfect. They turned the ball over four times and fumbled five times overall. But they also caused the 49ers to turn the ball over three times themselves. There was simply more good than bad for Seattle, including Jason Myers making all three of his field goals with one being the game winner.
Now the Seahawks enter their bye week firmly entrenched in the NFC playoff hunt and just one game behind the 49ers in the NFC West standings. Seattle lost Tyler Lockett to injury in the game but maybe with a week off he can come back. Basically, though, every 12 could probably use a week off to rest after Monday night’s Seattle victory.
