Pete Carroll saved the Seahawks season by trusting Jason Myers
Myers has had his struggles with the Seahawks
Of course, that didn’t work out perfectly for the Seahawks. The old guy was pretty good, but the kid was terrific. Unfortunately, Myers was terrific for the Jets instead of the Seahawks, and earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl. All Janikowski got was a trip to the doctor’s office after he injured his leg waving goodbye on a kick return.
Which brings us to 2019. Anxious to redress last season’s mistake, Seattle signed Myers to a sweet four-year deal. In camp, it looked like the Hawks kicking woes had been banished to the past. Once the season started, the picture wasn’t quite so rosy. Or College Navy, for that matter. Myers attempted five field goals in the first five games. He only made three of those kicks, missing from 58 and 48 yards. Neither of those are chip shots, but it was still concerning.
Myers made seven of his next eight attempts. His only miss came from 53 yards in the debacle against the Ravens. Seeing that he made three kicks in a game Seattle lost by two touchdowns, I can’t say that one miss was the downfall of the Seahawks. The problem didn’t really ramp up until two weeks later when the Buccaneers came to visit.
Yes, the Hawks won by six points, but they had to got to overtime to pull out the win. Myers made two field goals but also missed from 47 and 40 yards, the latter the potential game-winner as the clock ran out in the fourth quarter. He also missed an extra point that would have given Seattle the winning margin. It’s fair to say he missed his chance to give the Hawks the win twice. Happily, Russell Wilson worked his magic and brought the win home.
