Seahawks and 12s: today’s the day to root for the 49ers
The Seahawks are in the playoffs if they beat the Rams tonight. Believe it or not, today is a good day – make that the only day – to root for the 49ers.
As all good 12s know, a win today over the Rams puts the Seahawks in the playoffs. It won’t be easy, but I see the Hawks taking the win tonight to lock in a spot in the postseason. I was going to say punch their ticket, but when’s the last time a ticket was actually punched? Scan their ticket just sounds ridiculous, so – let’s just go with the Hawks win, Hawks are in. Their pals down the coast in San Francisco can make that playoff picture even better with a win today. That’s right, it’s time to root for the 49ers.
I know how difficult that will be, 12s, I truly do. But think about this for a minute. The Saints, 49ers, and Seahawks are all 10-2. By the time the Hawks win tonight – and they will win – one of those other guys will have another loss. Seattle will be much better off if New Orleans is the team that takes it on the chin.
As you know, the Hawks couldn’t come back against the Fleur de Lis way back in September. Our chance to beat them is gone, at least for now. After the Saints face the Niners today, they will face the Colts, Titans, and Panthers. None of those are pushovers, especially with the last two on the road. But their combined won-loss record is just 18-18. Today is by far the best chance for the Saints to get a third loss. Without that, the trip to the Super Bowl goes through New Orleans.
Now look at the 49ers schedule. After today’s matchup, they’ll play the Falcons, Rams and of course, the good guys in navy and gray. The Seahawks game will be their only road trip in the last three. The Falcons are awful and the Rams are – well, we’ll see what the Rams are tonight. Combined, Atlanta and Los Angeles are 10-14. The Niners aren’t likely to stumble against either team.
That would make the final game of the season a showdown for not only the division title, but for the first seed throughout the playoffs. As painful as it is, it makes much more sense for the 12s to root for their rivals today. We can’t do anything about the Saints now. We blew our chance. It won’t be easy to beat the Niners, but at least the Seahawks will have the chance to do it. Now, let’s all root for a tie!
