Seattle Seahawks: 2019 season awards
By Lee Vowell
Rookie of the Year
The Seahawks had 10 rookies that were on the roster by the end of the season. None of them made the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie team. But one should have: D.K. Metcalf. According to PFWA, the Titans A.J. Brown, who Metcalf played with in college, and the Redskins Terry McLaurin were better. Brown and McLaurin and Metcalf’s numbers were pretty comparable, so choosing Brown or McLaurin over Metcalf was merely a preference and not a fact.
D.K. Metcalf is the Seahawks Rookie of the Year and it isn’t a close competition.
Metcalf got better the last several weeks of the season and then exploded in the playoffs. Against the Eagles in the Wild Card he set a rookie record for receiving yards in a playoff game with 160. He averaged 22.9 yards a catch against Philadelphia and caught 7 of his 9 targets. In the divisional round against the Packers, Metcalf caught 4 of his 5 targets for 59 yards.
Overall, Metcalf finished his rookie season with 58 catches for 900 yards (3rd among all NFL rookies) and 7 touchdown catches (2nd). This after a lot of people thought maybe he would not be anything but a workout freak who might not amount to much in the NFL.
Thankfully, Metcalf should be even better next year and the year after that. He is just beginning to learn what it means to be an NFL receiver and in a few years could be one of the best in the league.
Rookie of the Year honorable mention: Linebacker Cody Barton
