Tight ends the Seahawks could target in the 2020 NFL Draft
By Geoff Shull
Seahawks final target: Josiah Deguara, Redshirt Senior, Cincinnati
Josiah Deguara stands at 6’3” 240lbs, making him a little undersized for the position. However, what he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in football IQ, blocking technique and route running.
Deguara shows good balance leaving his stance. His footwork while back pedaling is precise and executed to perfection. He is more than willing to get in the trenches with the big boys on the line. He plays with some nastiness in the blocking game that will surely get the coaches’ attention.
Deguara was a wide receiver in high school, and it is fairly obvious watching tape. He has some craftiness to his route running, which helps him create separation fairly easily. His long ball tracking skills are out of this world. This makes him a great safety net for Russell over the middle of the field. Over Deguara’ s junior and senior seasons he collected 972 yards and 12 TD’s.
In order for Deguara to succeed for the Seahawks (or any NFL team) as a tight end, he needs to build up additional muscle mass and add some weight. As it is now, he will likely get overpowered by bigger defensive lineman in the NFL.
Deguara has the potential to fit in the NFL similar to Kyle Rudolph. Yes, I know Rudolph is 6’6,” but hear me out. Both Rudolph and Deguara possess an excellent feel for the game, and how to create separation. They both are all out effort types who simply will themselves to succeed. Both players coming out of college needed desperately to add strength to avoid getting blown up when positioned inline. Rudolph is one of the premier pass catching tight ends in the NFL this year. He ended with the 7th most receiving yards in the NFL, despite being on a run first team.
Player comparison: Kyle Rudolph
Draft projection: 5th round
