Round 5: Seahawks select Myles Bryant, CB Washington

There is nothing about Myles Bryant’s physical skills that scream he belongs in the NFL. He is short, has small arms, isn’t a burner, and he doesn’t jump out of the gym. But when you put on the tape, it is hard to argue anything but the opposite. Myles Bryant consistently got himself onto the field playing on one of the best schools for defensive backs in the country.

NFL guys like Sydney Jones, Budda Baker, and Kevin King have come out of the University of Washington in recent years and yet Myles Bryant continued to find ways onto the field. Bryant does have one tool working for him: he is crazy quick. He ran a 4.02 20-yard shuttle and a 6.81 3-cone drill, which could make him a nice nickel corner.

But Bryant is a strong zone defender who is more than willing to stick his nose into the chest of any player on the field. He hits like a whip and uses his understanding of the scheme and quick wits to make up for his lack of size and speed.

Simply put, Bryant is a football player and for 4 years in the Pac-12, he’s been a damn good one. Nothing about this selection would be cause for celebration in the streets of Seattle. But Bryant is a grinder that his teammates love. His football IQ is off the charts. He gains incredible marks for his outstanding character.

And as we get deeper into the draft, the number of players who are without warts is zero. But for Bryant, his warts aren’t about injury issues, character concerns, and motor issues. Myles Bryant loves to play ball and is the type of player who will do anything to keep doing it. Bryant would be an incredible fit for the Seahawks locker room and immediately challenge Ugo Amadi for the nickel spot while busting his tail of special teams.

Bryant is the type of player who shows up in camp and fans fall in love with. He is a football player, through and through. Sometimes we forget that chasing dream measurables. But Bryant’s best skill is one you can’t measure. You just have to watch the tape.
