Three edge rushers Seahawks should take on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks have three picks, as of now, on Friday night’s part of the 2020 NFL Draft. Who should they go after at edge rusher? Maybe these three.
The Seahawks unsurprisingly surprised everyone last night by selecting linebacker Jordyn Brooks with their first pick. This was a very Seattle-y thing to do. Brooks might have a lot of speed and be a good tackler but he doesn’t chase down quarterbacks. Seattle still needs to get those guys.
So here are three players that the Seahawks should think about taking in the second and third rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Julian Okwara, edge rusher, Notre Dame
I have written about Okwara before. He would be a solid pick. The way the draft is unfolding, Okwara could easily be around when Seattle chooses next at number 58. Okwara has a ton of speed and a high-motor. He needs to gain some strength but should be able to get 5 sacks or so in his rookie season based solely on raw ability.
And honestly, if Seattle chooses Okwara and he gets to 5 sacks, that would be great. The sad part is that 5 sacks would have led Seattle in 2019.
Jabari Zuniga, edge rusher, Florida
Zuniga is a lot like Okwara. He is very athletic and is 6’4″. Zuniga isn’t huge at just 250 pounds and he will need to gain some strength as well, but on pure speed alone he should be able to help Seattle in 2020. Plus, with an NFL weight program, he could gain 15 to 20 pounds and keep most of his speed and be a force starting in 2021.
Zuniga had 11 tackles for loss in 2018 to go with 6.5 sacks. In 2019 he played in just 5 games but had 5.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. He will be good one day.
Jonathan Greenard, edge rusher, Florida
Maybe the Seahawks could figure out a way to get both Greenard and Zuniga. They would be used to playing opposite each other and both are capable of being very productive in the NFL. Greenard had 10 sacks in 2019 and improved every year in college. That is a good sign.
Greenard also has great size for a Seahawks defensive end. He is 6’4″ and 263 pounds. That is about 10 pounds less than Frank Clark weighed during his days in Seattle. I like Greenard and feel he would excel in Seattle’s system with his athletic ability. Now, Seattle just needs to get someone else good opposite him.
