The Seahawks have two very good receivers. DK Metcalf is one of them. What should 12s expect from DK Metcalf’s 2020 season?

I will be honest, it is a little easy to expect too much from DK Metcalf during the 2020 season. The Seahawks soon-to-be second-year pro is a physical freak. But not only was he born with more strength and speed than most humans, but he also works hard to get better. Metcalf, as Russell Wilson said before last season, could be a Hall of Fame receiver when his career ends.

What went wrong in 2019 for DK Metcalf

But man, that is a lot of pressure to put on such a young player. While Metcalf did produce 900 yards in his rookie season, he was also 27th in the NFL in drop percentage at 7 percent. Metcalf was targeted 100 times and caught 58 passes, but 82 of those targets were catchable, according to Pro Football Focus. Metcalf could have had better numbers than 12s saw.

What went right for DK Metcalf in 2019

So throw out the sad numbers for DK Metcalf for a minute. There are lots of legitimate reasons 12s should hope Metcalf blossoms into the superstar many expect. He was second among rookies in receptions, third in receiving yards and third in touchdown catches (7).

Plus, the Seahawks saw him completely blow up the Eagles in the Wild Card game. Metcalf had 7 receptions for a record 160 yards and a touchdown. His numbers were lower against the Packers in Seattle’s divisional-round loss, but Metcalf still caught four of his five targets. So in the postseason Metcalf catch rate went from 58 percent in the regular season to 78.5 percent.

What DK Metcalf will do in 2020

The Seahawks appear to be reacting to Russell Wilson’s offseason request to get more weapons and top-end talent. Seattle signed good receiving tight end Greg Olsen and added Carlos Hyde to backup Chris Carson. Seattle wants to win with offense. This means Wilson will probably throw more and this means more targets for Metcalf.

Metcalf also stays dedicated to getting in great shape. Plus, his football IQ is higher than people expected. This offseason he has been working out some with former Seahawks corner Richard Sherman and receiver Josh Gordon. Learning from Sherman how to beat press coverage possibly? And learning how to use his hands well from Gordon?

Great receivers like Julio Jones, DeSean Jackson and Amari Cooper all had a bit north of 900 yards receiving in their rookie seasons. All of them went over 1,100 yards in the year-twos. Metcalf, with fewer drops and a better knowledge of what it means to be an NFL receiver should have great stats in 2020.

Predicted stat line: Catches 80; Yards 1,320; Touchdowns 11
