Seahawks trading Russell Wilson would be clinically insane
No one trades Hall of Fame talent at this age
I don’t know about you, folks, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to trade away 86 percent of your offense. Especially when by this time, Seattle knew it was very likely that Kam Chancellor would never play another down. Richard Sherman had already left for the (ugh) 49ers, so the Hawks knew they would need to rely on the offense more than ever. So, yeah, trade away 86 percent of it, go ahead. At the time, Russell Wilson’s career passer rating was only second all-time in the league. And still second all-time, really easy to replace.
So why is this a story for 2020, the year that we all should have canceled back in January? Apparently, there are still rumors going around that the Seahawks are exploring the market for a potential trade. The key word in this rumor is “eventual”. Sure, there’s definitely precedent for a superstar quarterback to be traded – but not at the age of 31. Wilson will be 32 at the end of November, more than halfway through the presumed season.
Hall of Fame level QBs who were traded away include Joe Montana, who was 37 when the Niners sent him packing. Peyton Manning left the Colts after he turned 34, but that was only due to his neck injury that Indianapolis thought had ended his career. Brett Favre was with the Packers until he was 39. Drew Brees is a bit different, as he really only had one great year with the Chargers until blowing up with the Saints. And of course, Tom Brady will be 43 when he takes the field for the Buccaneer. Nobody trades a top talent like Wilson at this point in their career.
