3 Seahawks I expect to take a leap forward in 2020
By Geoff Shull
DK Metcalf – Wide receiver
DK Metcalf had a rookie year to remember. He broke the Seahawks record for most receiving yards in a rookie debut. He also broke the NFL record for most receiving yards by a rookie in a playoff debut.
The bar has been set very high for Metcalf entering his sophomore campaign. Sure, it’s possible he takes a step back into the dreaded sophomore slump. However, with the work ethic that Metcalf has, I find it far more likely he ascends into stardom in year 2. After all, coming into the NFL he was labeled as a poor route runner. Just halfway into the 2019 season, Metcalf learned how to do this.
His stats from 2019: 58 receptions, 900 yards, 7 touchdowns and 273 yards after the catch.
Metcalf fell into the perfect position when he was selected by the Seahawks in round 2. Pairing Metcalf’s size and speed with Russell Wilson’s elusiveness and deep ball accuracy is a pairing that could ascend the offense to another level for years to come.
Metcalf’s main struggles from his rookie year were dropped passes and fumbles. The dropped passes seemed to come in waves, he would go several games without any, then hit one game with multiple drops. The fumbles mainly were caused by trying to do too much. This was something Coach Carroll spoke to Metcalf about, specifically knowing when to go down.
When Coach Carroll was asked what impressed him the most about Metcalf in the Flying Coach podcast (starts at 26:30 mark); He stated:
"“Through the (draft) process, I’ve got to tell you, I didn’t embrace what an extraordinary individual the guy was. I didn’t know that. There was so much hype and all that about him. It kind of precluded maybe the good clear analysis that I would have liked to have made. Now that I know him, he’s unbelievable. He’s such a hard worker. He cares so much and he’s smart. It matters to him. He takes care of his business; his world is in order. He can’t wait to get great. He’s so determined to be a great player. We didn’t know that right away either.”"
His work ethic and drive are going to bring him to greatness. Pairing his athleticism, drive, and work ethic with Russell Wilson’s… we’re about to see something beautiful happen in the NFL. Were going to see a star born in year 2.
Projected stats for 2020:
- Receptions: 72
- Yards: 1,200
- Touchdowns: 9
- YAC: 350
