Seahawks all-time Mount Rushmore: 2020 edition
By Lee Vowell
Steve Largent
Steve Largent was the first superstar the Seahawks ever had. By the time he retired in 1989, he held the NFL all-time marks for receiving yards (13,089), receptions (819) and receiving touchdowns (100). The argument could be made that when Largent retired, he had been the best receiver in NFL history.
Largent is still the best receiver in Seahawks history and it isn’t close. Largent’s receiving yards leads Seahawks all-time second-place receiver Brian Blades by 5,469 yards. No other Seahawk even has half his touchdown total of 100. Doug Baldwin is next best at 49. And Blades is next best at all-time passes caught but he is 238 receptions short.
To put it even more in perspective, current Seahawks Tyler Lockett would have to average 925 yards receiving over the next 10 years to equal what Largent did in his career. Lockett would also have to average 7 touchdowns receiving a year over the next 10 seasons though he has reached that mark just twice in his five-year career.
And just imagine what Largent’s number would look like in the 2020 NFL. If Largent were in his prime, he would be catching 100-plus passes a season and10-plus touchdowns a year. Largent caught just an average of 58 passes a season in his 14-year career. Had he averaged just 70 receptions a season in today’s NFL, he would have 15,680 yards. That would be third all-time.
Largent was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1995.
