In Monday’s Seahawks news, Seattle officially signed 2020 sixth-round draft pick Freddie Swain.

There is seemingly always a little Seahawks news to go around. On Monday, Seattle announced that it officially signed 2020 sixth round pick Freddie Swain. Swain is a receiver out of Florida who will be lucky to make the active roster, but he has the versatility to make an impact.

Swain signed for four seasons. He will make $610,000 in base salary this year so his pay will not affect Seattle’s 2020 offseason cap space. If Swain is able to still be playing for Seattle in 2023, his salary would be $1,010,000.

NFL draftees don’t really have any drama to their contracts anymore. Because of the collective bargaining agreement, nearly every draft selection is locked in place as far as how much money can be spent on that pick.

Swain will be fighting for a roster spot with fellow receivers Phillip Dorsett, David Moore, John Ursua and more. What Swain can help Seattle with potentially is returning kicks and punts. The only real success has had over the last few years in that area is when Tyler Lockett is returning the ball.

Why Swain can make the team

But Lockett and D.K. Metcalf are locks to make the team as receivers. And Lockett is now far more valuable as a receiver than as a kick or punt returner. Metcalf isn’t going to return kicks. So that means receivers who can catch a bit and return kicks pretty well give themselves a better chance at making the team. This is where Swain might be able to separate himself from the others in the group.

Swain is the second rookie from this year’s Seahawks draft class to sign with the team. Colby Parkinson was the first. Hopefully, within a couple of seasons, these two players and the rest of Seattle’s draftees are making Seahawks news every game.
