The Seahawks need to play more nickel packages in 2020 and Ugo Amadi will make the defense better if Seattle does.

Pete Carroll has already admitted this offseason that the Seahawks should have played Ugo Amadi earlier and more often than they did in 2019. Amadi wasn’t prepared to play a larger role when the playoffs rolled around and it showed against the Packers when Aaron Rodgers made Amadi look bad on a couple of occasions.

Amadi, though, has nearly perfect size for a slot corner in the NFL. He also isn’t slow. What hurt him against the Packers was inexperience. Amadi simply wasn’t in the right place at the right time and didn’t know have the experience to make up for indecision.

The nickel job for the Seahawks seems to be Amadi’s for the taking. But with the Seahawks adding cornerback Quinton Dunbar this offseason a 12 could wonder exactly what Seattle is going to do in the secondary.

Dunbar’s arrival means something has to be done with Tre Flowers. Flowers is probably too big to play nickel, but so is Dunbar. Flowers wasn’t very good at the end of 2019 but showed promise in 2018, his rookie season.

Could Seattle be thinking of moving either Dunbar or Flowers to nickel? Flowers playing nickel might mean Seattle using him to pinch the run a bit. He is a decent tackler and was a safety in college. But Flowers might be too tall to have the quick hip action that a nickel needs to pivot and cover receivers straight off the line of scrimmage.

Ugo Amadi’s promise

Amadi does, however. He looks like Justin Coleman who was an excellent nickel for Seattle in 2017 and 2018.  The Seahawks just need to put Amadi in a better position to succeed. In week one of last year, Amadi played defensive 20 snaps. From weeks 2 through 13, however, Amadi played a total of one. Seriously, one.

Next. 5 Seahawks that could be cut before playing a snap. dark

Amadi, if given the chance, should lock down the nickel position for the Seahawks starting in 2020 and do so for the next few years. He will make Seattle’s defense better in the same way Coleman did. The Seahawks should be playing more nickel packages in 2020 so that means Amadi on the field more and that is a good thing.
