The Seahawks need to add more star power. Chris Jones could be just the man for the job.

Chris Jones was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, out of Mississippi State. During the pre-draft process, he was labeled as a flash in a pan type of player. He was dominant on some plays, then non-existent in others.

Scouts believed his extreme athleticism allowed him to fit all over the defensive line. His best positional fits were either as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme, or 4-3 defensive tackle. There was also some hope that with his athleticism, he could move into a 5-tech defensive end on certain downs in a 4-3 formation.

Player:                 Chris Jones

Age:                      25 years old

Height:                6’6”      96% percentile

Weight:               310lbs      66th percentile

Hand Size:         10.75 inches      92nd percentile

Arm Length:      34.5 inches     87th percentile

40-Yard Dash:  5.03 seconds     68th percentile

3-Cone:              7.44 seconds     78th percentile

In his final collegiate season, he played with deceptive quickness and excellent bend. Using that, along with his long arms, he was phenomenal in rushing the passer. In fact, he was the second-highest graded pass rusher in the NCAA that year. Scouts, however, were concerned with his raw technique, inconsistent motor and allowing his pad level to get too high.

The Chiefs saw enough potential to take him early in the second round. Boy, oh boy, did this pay off. Jones has quickly developed into one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL.

Year:                  2016       2017       2018       2019

Tackles:            28           32            40           36

Sacks:                2             6.5          15.5        9.0

FF:                      0              4               2              1

Pass D:              4              7               5              4

Pressure %:    7.5%        8.9%       12.6%      10.8%

Jones finished 3rd last season in sacks, 4th in tackles for a loss, and 2nd in QB pressure rate amongst defensive tackles. The year prior, 2nd in sacks, 11th in tackles for a loss and 2nd in QB pressure. Talk about consistency year to year.

When people speak of the top defensive lineman, Chris Jones is almost always in the discussion right below Aaron Donald. This is not the caliber player that typically comes available for a trade.
