Pete Carroll of the Seahawks is now the oldest head coach in the NFL. Whether you like him or not, it’s time to start looking for his successor.

As he enters his eleventh season in charge of the Seahawks, Pete Carroll is currently the oldest NFL head coach at 68 years of age. By Week 2 Carroll will be 69 years old, which will match Tom Coughlin as the oldest NFL head coach in the 21st century. Carroll has coached this long because of his successful Seahawks teams of the 2010s, but he has had his share of annoyed fans and bad moments.

Twitter trolls and friends who root for opposing teams will always think of Carroll’s shortcoming as his final decision made in Super Bowl XLIX, but Seahawks fans’ frustrations with him have been more recent. The past few seasons other NFL offenses with star mobile QBs like the Ravens and Chiefs have unleashed their passing attacks and creative play calls.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks offense under Carroll and Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has failed to graduate to this new normal, with their “establish the run” mindset and maybe the occasional flea-flicker or George Fant reception.

The chances of Carroll being fired and me winning the lottery are in a similar statistical category, but with his age, his love for old-style offenses, and the pressure from the “Let Russ cook” crowd, there will be a changing of the guard soon in Seattle. It could even be a surprise retirement, as Washington Huskies fans would tell you that it may be more probable than you think.

If Carroll does decide to retire within the next one or two offseasons, I’m confident that the next Seahawks head coach is on this list. Before the top 5, I give you some honorable mentions, with some very well known names.
