Anthony Gordon – Quarterback

The Seahawks signed quarterback Anthony Gordon as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the 2020 NFL Draft. Gordon became the starter at Washington State in his final year of eligibility. In his final year, he completed 71.9 percent of his passes for 5,579 yards, and 48 touchdowns but 16 interceptions. In the match against UCLA—likely the most exciting Pac-12 game in a while—he threw for nine touchdowns.

Upon my personal analysis of Gordon’s college tape, I saw similarities in Gordon and Super Bowl 54 champion, Patrick Mahomes, in how they can both improvise from within the pocket. It’ll be interesting to see how Gordon adjusts to a slowed-down pro offense compared to the proactive Air Raid system he ran in college. While many teams are instilling offenses similar to college teams, the Seahawks will likely not steer away from their fun-focused approach.

The biggest thing going for Gordon right now is his pocket composure that resembles that of lead QB, Russell Wilson, who is one of the best, if not the best, composed quarterbacks in the league.

Right now, Gordon joins Geno Smith in the backup quarterback battle in Seattle. It’s unlikely that the Seahawks will keep three quarterbacks on the roster as the last time they have done so was in 2014, the year of their last super bowl appearance.

While Gordon has all the right tools to beat out Geno Smith, an NFL journeyman; it really depends on how much he can impress the Seattle coaching staff during training camp. Even then, he has a huge chance of making the practice squad.
