DE Alton Robinson

This offseason, the Seahawks drafted two defensive ends: Darrell Taylor in the second round, and Alton Robinson in the fifth round. It would seem logical to imagine that, if one were to start in 2020, it would be Taylor, right?

In my opinion, it’s not that simple. As intriguing of a talent as Taylor is, there’s still a lot for him to learn before he can step into a significant role with Seattle. He needs to expand his set of pass-rush moves, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he struggled early due to the subpar right tackles he often faced in college.

Meanwhile, Robinson battled stiffer competition in the ACC and boasts superior athleticism. Although he had a down year in 2019 (relatively), the potential he flashed in 2018 makes me believe he could outshine his fellow rookie early during their NFL careers.

Both will have to outshine Benson Mayowa, L.J. Collier and Rasheem Green to earn snaps in 2020. However, none of those names strike fear when it comes to rushing the passer. If none impress across from Bruce Irvin and one of the rookies steps up during practice and the preseason (if there is one), don’t be surprised if they catapult themselves up the depth chart.

In this scenario, I’m banking on Robinson’s athleticism and quickness off the snap to give him the edge and earn him at least a couple of starts before the 2020 season is in the books.
