Many questioned the Seahawks for drafting Russell Wilson in the 3rd round of the 2012 draft. It’s safe to say the Seahawks have had the last laugh.

It makes absolutely no sense of how it could be possible, but the Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson just keeps getting better. Every year I think, well he must have hit his ceiling by now. He never fails to shows me just how wrong I am.

This is a situation Russell Wilson is very familiar with. He is fully aware of the doubt that constantly surrounds him. Coaches and analysts couldn’t see past Russell Wilson’s size and how improbable it is for him to make it into the NFL. Wilson never wavered. He knew who he was, what he wanted, and wasn’t afraid to put the work in to get there.

Fast forward to 2020, Russell Wilson is a truly elite quarterback. Recently, I had a close friend ask what quarterback I would pick if I were to start a franchise today? The answer came down to two players, Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is just an unreal talent. Everything seems to come so naturally to him. He makes the impossible happen, and happen often.

Meanwhile, Wilson brings so much more to Seattle than just winning games. His leadership is about as picture-perfect as it can get. He simply doesn’t give up. Not on himself, and certainly not on his teammates. When times get tough, he gets tougher. When a big play needs to happen, there aren’t many players who I would trust to make it happen over him.

After some serious thought, the answer was clear. I would pick Russell Wilson. An argument can be made that Wilson has done more, with less, when looking at both quarterback’s supporting casts. I also see more of a leader in Wilson than I do in Mahomes.

Wilson creates a culture around him, he is the culture. Mahomes lets winning games be the culture. Wilson can and has beat adversity. We have yet to see what would happen to Mahome’s culture if he hits a rough streak. Cracks could form in a culture purely built around winning. I would take the Wilson and his natural-born leadership over the pure talent that is Mahomes.

It’s rather humorous. Despite the fact that Wilson is in the conversation for the best quarterback in the NFL, he has never received an MVP vote. This stands even more true for the 2019 season. I mean he was absolutely phenomenal. I get it though; Lamar Jackson was an unreal talent and played the position like no one else. However, for Wilson to not receive a single vote. It was simply disrespectful.
