Seahawks trade idea No. 3: Jaguars DE, Yannick Ngakoue

Yannick Ngakoue has become the forgotten man. The media highlighted him for months in trade speculation. However, the chatter has since died down.

I can promise you; this is not due to a change of heart on Yannick Ngakoue’s behalf. He has remained steadfast in his desire to leave Jacksonville due to disputes with the organization. The best part of this, the Jaguars have zero leverage in this.

Reports have come out that not a single team has even submitted an official offer for Ngakoue. Ngakoue has gotten into verbal altercations with the president of operations and the owner’s son about refusing to trade him.  It is very possible he sits out of training camp, the pre-season and potential the regular season.

He simply is doing anything he can to try to force his way out of Jacksonville. He wants to play for a winning team and get into a winning culture. Fortunately, due to his antics, his value is rock bottom and Seattle could likely get him for pennies on the dollar.

Don’t let this rock bottom trade steer you away from how talented Ngakoue is. Over his first 4 seasons, he has averaged 9.4 sacks, 10.5 tackles for a loss, 30.5 tackles, and 3.5 forced fumbles per season. His sack numbers have never dropped below 8 for a season.

A contract equal to what Seattle reportedly offered Jadeveon Clowney at the scouting combine is where I think Seattle would be in terms of compensation.

Terms: 4 years, $74 million

Avg Salary: $18.5 million

Cap Hits:

  • 2020: $12.5 million
  • 2021: $19.5 million
  • 2022: $20.5 million
  • 2023: $21.5 million

Ngakoue is just 25 years old and should be entering his prime. He has posted that his desire to leave and join a new team has never been about the money. It is never about the money. He clearly sees the direction the organization is going and doesn’t want any part of the rebuild.

Seattle currently has around $4 million in true cap. So, it is safe to question if Seattle can actually afford any of these contract offers. All I can tell you, if the Seahawks want to make a deal work, they can easily do so with any of the methods I have outlined here.
