Seahawks position preview: Defensive end breakdowns, starters and cuts
Re-additions
Bruce Irvin
Irvin comes back to the Seahawks, who drafted him in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, after stints with the Raiders, Falcons, and Panthers. Even though he is listed as a linebacker on the Seahawks website, Irvin will be a defensive end for the Seahawks like he was in his four years in Seattle.
Irvin had 8.5 sacks, 8 tackles for loss, and 16 QB hits last season in Carolina. All three of those stats would’ve led the Seahawks if Irvin put up those numbers with Seattle last season.
Because of this, the Seahawks will hope that Bruce can continue his success and potentially be the best pass rusher on the team. At age 32, Irvin will look to bring back his success from the previous year and his time in Seattle earlier in his career.
Benson Mayowa
Mayowa comes back to Seattle in the heart of his prime at age 29. His rookie season, which also happened to be his only season in Seattle, Mayowa only appeared in two games and put up virtually no stats. However, he has had a decent seven-year career as a backup defensive end with the Raiders, Cowboys, Cardinals, and another stint with the Raiders.
In limited snaps coming off the bench for Oakland last year, Mayowa recorded 7 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, and 10 QB Hits. Despite his good numbers, Mayowa could not earn a multi-year or big deal anywhere and decided to come back to the Seahawks on a one year, $3.05 million deal that is mostly guaranteed and can be worth up to $4 million with incentives.
