Seahawks news you may have missed from last week
By Lee Vowell
While Seattle has recently made some splashy moves like trading for Jamal Adams, here are some other notable things you may have missed in Seahawks news.
Training camp officially got underway, sort of, for Seattle last week. But there wasn’t much on the field Seahawks news to take away from camp. It is a bit too early for that as players will have no on-field contact until mid-August. But what might you have missed in news surrounding the Seattle football franchise from last week?
Antonio Brown gets suspended 8 games
OK, this one you probably already knew. Plus, Antonio Brown has never been a member of the Seahawks. But it feels a bit like it, doesn’t it? I am so over the Brown-might-come-to-Seattle rumors. Now he has been suspended for eight games to start 2020 for an alleged sexual assault and violating the league’s personal-conduct policy. This means if a team signs him now, they will have to keep a roster spot open for him when he returns halfway through the season.
Brown isn’t coming to the Seahawks anytime soon. Just re-sign Josh Gordon and let’s move on from Brown.
Kerry Joseph is hired to be a Seahawks offensive assistant coach
Kerry Joseph had a weird playing career. He was a Seattle safety from 1998 to 2001 and then played in the Canadian Football League as a quarterback, and I swear I am not making this up. In fact, in the CFL, Joseph threw for over 4,000 yards three times. But he was a safety with Seattle.
Joseph has now been hired by the Seahawks to be an offensive assistant coach, mostly aiding with running backs. He has been a college assistant coach for the last five years with both McNeese State, his alma mater, and Southeastern.
Seahawks news: Seattle has its COVID-19 response plan approved
Each NFL team needed to come up with a way to respond to any issues that might arise from players getting COVID-19 this year. Seattle had their infectious disease emergency response plan approved by the NFLPA last week.
Basically, this just meant Seattle could start training camp, which they did. Without a response plan in place, NFL teams could have no more than 20 players in team facilities.
Tedric Thompson is now a Kansas City Chief
Former Seahawks safety Thompson signed last week with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. He will be a backup. No terms were disclosed. Thompson had two interceptions for Seattle last season but 12s will remember him more as a player who got beat badly deep a couple of times.
Word to the wise, if you happen to be a team playing the Chiefs and you see Thompson on the field, throw the ball deep and see what silliness ensues. And then celebrate the fact that you probably just scored a touchdown.
