The Seahawks brought back two 2020 undrafted free agents in Seth Dawkins and Patrick Carr on Friday. What does this mean for the 2020 roster?

The Seahawks released Patrick Carr and Seth Dawkins in late July. Then they thought about. And on Friday Seattle decided to bring back the 2020 undrafted free agents and add them to the 80-man roster. Neither are likely to make the 53-man roster once the regular season starts, but that is OK.

It is telling that no other team picked up Carr or Dawkins after they were released by the Seahawks. Not that Carr nor Dawkins is good enough to play in the NFL, maybe they are. But that no one else chose to scoop them up means that if they do not make the 53-man roster they will probably land on Seattle’s practice squad.

Making a roster is always difficult for an undrafted rookie but 2020 will be worse. Since there are no preseason games there isn’t any way a team can see this type of player in live action. So an undrafted rookie making a team means they have done something really special in camp.

Good news for Carr and Dawkins

The good thing for receiver Dawkins and running back Carr is that the NFL has expanded practice squads for this year to 16. Maybe they won’t make the Seahawks this year but they will have a chance in future seasons and keep playing football.

Next. Should Seahawks sign Jadeveon Clowney or Clay Matthews?. dark

Carr might have a better chance at playing sooner than Dawkins. Seattle did sign free agent Carlos Hyde this offseason. But based on the health histories of starting running back Chris Carson and third-year pro Rashaad Penny, Seattle might need to add depth to the running back group sometime this year.
