The Seahawks re-signed Benson Mayowa this offseason to pressure quarterbacks. In his Sunday press conference, Mayowa says it will take a village to do so.

Think the Seahawks need Jadeveon Clowney back to make Seattle successful getting to the quarterback this coming season? Benson Mayowa, who was re-signed by Seattle after a few years away, disagrees with you. In his training camp press conference on Sunday, Mayowa said, “Pass rushing takes a village of guys.” And Seattle clearly tried to do that this offseason.

Mayowa was one of the players, along with Bruce Irvin, who Seattle will try to throw at the pass-rushing issue of 2019. This might be a bit like when you take your car to the mechanic and he says you need all the suspension parts on the driver’s side front but you might just need a lower control arm. Seattle might really have just needed Jadeveon Clowney to fix several issues.

Clowney remains a free agent and one who I think the Seahawks should make every effort to re-sign. Within reason, of course. Seattle shouldn’t pay Clowney $18 million a year, but $13 million would be fine. Let’s win a lot of games in 2020, Seahawks.

According to Mayowa, though, “You don’t always need the big-name guys.” The question posed to Mayowa was a bit of a dumb one and was an implication that Seattle needed to re-sign Clowney to be good. It was specifically about Clowney. Mayowa has enough confidence in himself and his current fellow teammates to believe Seattle will be better in the pass rush than they were in 2019.

In referring specifically about Clowney, Mayowa said, “I don’t know him, I don’t know what happened…I can control what I can control.” Good. Mayowa seems to have the drive to make Seattle better in 2020 and the years of experience to do so.

Benson Mayowa admittedly has a “chip on his shoulder” and that keeps him driven to be better. Sounds exactly like a Pete Carroll player and that is what the Seahawks need to be good again in 2020: More Pete Carroll-type players.
