The Seahawks signed two players on Tuesday. Neither, however, should be expected to make Seattle’s active roster in 2020.

The Seahawks need some defensive tackle help for 2020 as they currently only have starters Jarran Reed and Poona Ford has proven commodities. On Tuesday, Seattle signed P.J. Johnson to possibly add depth.

Seattle also signed quarterback Danny Etling. But let’s be real. Neither Johnson nor Etling should be expected to make the active roster this season. Neither has ever played in a real NFL game and both have been on multiple teams. But, still.

P.J. Johnson

Johnson is a big guy. He stands 6’3″ and weighs 335 pounds. He has the size to be a defensive tackle in the NFL. He was drafted in 2019 by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round. Johnson played in every preseason game for the Lions last year but was cut before week one.

Johnson landed on the Los Angeles Chargers practice squad for the last month of the season but was waived at the beginning of this month. He basically has a hope of making the Seahawks practice squad in 2020 as those squads have expanded to 16 players.

Danny Etling

Of course, the worst-case scenario for any Seahawks season is if Russell Wilson gets hurt and has to miss a lot of games. If Russell Wilson does get injured, Geno Smith is likely to be his backup while undrafted free agent Anthony Gordon might be on the practice squad.

Etling has so far been on the Patriots practice teams (they tried to convert him to a receiver) and to the Falcons training camp squad (they converted him back to quarterback).

Etling signing means he will get some snaps in practice to help work the defense. Etling isn’t going to make the Seahawks team and won’t make the practice squad either, most likely. Still, Etling is still working to achieve his dream of playing professional football. And that is something a lot of us fans would love to have the chance to do.
