DK Metcalf’s rookie season

Many coaches meeting with a player like DK Metcalf who pulled a stunt like taking his shirt off before entering an introduction would find it disheartening, but not Mr. Enthusiastic, Pete Carroll.

After DK Metcalf was drafted, he received a FaceTime call from his new quarterback, Russell Wilson. Wilson told him to get ready to work and DK did indeed, get right to work.

One thing Russell Wilson is known for is his trusting his wideouts regardless of where they got drafted if they were even drafted. The Seattle Seahawks have not had a top 5 WR in recent years and apart of that, is because Wilson can make it work with nearly anyone. His trust in DK was on full display throughout the season.

According to Pro Football Reference, Wilson targeted Metcalf 100 times, connecting on 58 of those for 900 yards, in which 7 of them resulted in touchdowns. Metcalf’s 900-yard rookie season ranked third among rookies.

Wilson’s trust was exhibited in the red zone. Within 20 yards, Metcalf was targeted 17 times, ranking 15th out of all wideouts. He recorded 5 touchdowns from within 20 yards (PFT), one of being an impressive leaping catch in week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which was his first touchdown in the NFL.
