Seahawks stud number 1: DK Metcalf, Wide receiver

I figured I would get the most obvious out of the way first. However, don’t get me wrong, DK Metcalf is about as deserving as you can get to be on the stud list.

Do you recall what I said about Jamal Adams making plays every practice. Yeah, that same rule applies to DK Metcalf. It is so crystal clear and obvious that Metcalf spent his entire off-season preparing, it is not even funny. The guy looks sharp.

Metcalf’s routes looks crisp. His footwork is precise (much improved). His speed, well we already know he is fast. The most important thing, he looks confident and ready to wreak havoc. Players and coaches have taken notice as well.

When Quinton Dunbar was asked about DK Metcalf, he said:

"I haven’t been practicing too much, so I haven’t really gotten to go up against those guys (Metcalf and Tyler Lockett). But watching from the sideline, Metcalf looks amazing man. (He) looks like Julio (Jones) out there."

That is some high praise. Julio Jones has been widely regarded as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL for the better part of a decade. It’s understandable from a physical aspect to compare the two. Jones, like Metcalf, is an athletic marvel.

Players:                     Metcalf           Jones

Height:                       6’3”                 6’3”

Weight:                      228 lbs            220 lbs

40-Yard:                     4.33 s               4.34 s

Vertical Jump:          40.5 in           38.5 in

Broad Jump:             134 in            135 in

Both players are near elite levels in terms of their explosive and speed testing from the combine. They can blow the top off with their speed. They also possess the strength to play some bully-ball with the smaller cornerbacks. However, it’s not just their athletics traits that make them similar. Let’s look at their rookie stats:

Players:                     Metcalf           Jones

Targets:                     100                   95

Receptions:               58                    54

Yards:                         900                 959

Touchdowns:            7                       8

I am not saying DK Metcalf is Julio Jones. However, with the amount of work that Metcalf is putting in, his trajectory is definitely heading in that direction. If Metcalf takes a similar jump to Jones in year two, it could be huge for the Seahawks. Julio Jones stats in his second season: 128 targets, 79 catches, 1198 yards and 10 touchdowns.
