4. Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have a few stars and future stars within their secondary such as Patrick Peterson, Budda Baker, Jalen Thompson, and Byron Murphy. But the rest is full of unproductive and unproven players. They also recently added veteran Dre Kirkpatrick, who played only six games in 2019 and was later put on injured reserve. There are decent players here in the desert, no doubt, but going into the 2020 season, the Cardinals secondary doesn’t have the same level of talent that the three other teams in the NFC West have.

2020 will be the second season under head coach Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. In 2019, their defense ranked 23rd in total defense DVOA at 7.2% while they also ranked 27th in pass defense DVOA at 20.7%. They also allowed a 70% completion percentage for 47 touchdowns against the 13 teams they played.

The NFC West has stacked up on wide receiver talent once again this offseason. It’s going to be a real test to learn how to stop players like Deebo Samuel, Cooper Kupp, and D.K. Metcalf. It’s going to become a significant effort by the Cardinals to step up their defensive game.

If corner Byron Murphy can take a step up in his second year in the NFL, the Cardinals defense will take a significant step forward. Likely the starter in 2020, Murphy had six interceptions for one touchdown and four tackles for loss in two years at the University of Washington before becoming a 2019 second-round draft pick.
