A day after releasing Shaquem Griffin, the Seahawks re-signed the linebacker/edge rusher to the 2020 practice squad.

Rejoice, 12s! A day after Shaquem Griffin was released by the Seahawks he is back. Only now he will be on the practice squad. But here is the thing. Due to COVID-19 and all of the necessary rules surrounding how to protect players, practice squads are now 16 players deep. Two of these players can be added to the 53-man roster each game week, however, so a practice squad player signed on Sunday could play in week one.

This could be especially true for Shaquem Griffin. The Seahawks need as many pass rushers, and a deep rotation of them, as possible. Seattle doesn’t have a superstar at defensive end so they will attempt to throw the entire toolbox at any given team. And Griffin has tools the Seahawks can use.

At the end of 2019, Seattle and defensive coordinator Ken Norton, Jr., appeared to be finding a way to use Griffin on passing downs. Remember the sack that Griffin had with his brother Shaquill against the Packers in the playoff game? Of course, you do! Any human with a heart would. In a rare inside stunt and corner combo blitz, the Griffin brothers met in the middle and took down Aaron Rodgers.

Shaquem Griffin is a fast player. He has a knack for getting to the quarterback and if it weren’t for the fact that has one hand some other team would have – and should have – taken a chance on him when the Seahawks released him Saturday.

Shaquem Griffin can help the Seahawks

But Shaquem is rightfully back with the Seahawks, according to reports, and he will help the team this year. Seattle needs to use him in the pass rush week one against Matt Ryan and the Falcons. Griffin might be only on the practice squad but since there are new 55-man rules, he can still help right away.

Plus, his brother Shaquill is a valuable member of the Seahawks so it certainly doesn’t hurt to keep Shaquem around for morale as well. Shaquill is in a contract season and can sign elsewhere after this year. But hopefully, he and Shaquem will both be back in 2021 helping Seattle win football games.
