The Seattle Seahawks picked up a 38-25 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on the road to begin 1-0 for the second straight year.

The NFL is finally back! That means our Seattle Seahawks are finally back! The Seahawks opened up their season on the road in Atlanta against the Falcons. With no fans present in the Mercedes Bens Stadium — and nearly every other stadium that hosted a football game this weekend — the offense was entering with a significant advantage of not having to deal with crowd noise. While they did pump in noise, it was not truly able to replicate the real effects it has on the game.

It is always a feel-good moment to see your team start off their season with a victory as it builds confidence and allows everyone to end their week with a smile on their face. The Seahawks were able to do that for all the 12s around the world. In an impressive debut in their 2020 regular season, here are my 5 takeaways from the Seahawks victory over the Falcons.

The Seahawks are committed to social justice

After the deaths of many unarmed African-American men and women, the NFL has decided to take a stand this season. In the midst of a national pandemic, social justice efforts have emerged at the forefront and have taken over all aspects of America. The effects have been seen on the market, on our government and future election and for the purposes of this forum, in sports. We have seen the NBA paint “Black Lives Matter” on their hardwood floor to spread awareness on the issue and show they stand on the right side of justice.

It has been displayed in the NFL as teams have had the words “end racism” painted on the outside of the end zones. Teams have also put the same note on their helmets. With many teams debating on whether or not to sit or stand during the national anthem (which has been occurring ever since Colin Kaepernick did it), we have seen a new form of unity emerge. Many teams are now collaborating with one another before the game to discuss a way in which they can show they stand together in this fight for justice. In Thursday Night seasons opener between the Chiefs and Texans, we saw both players on each roster link arms across the field.

With our beloved Seahawks, Matt Ryan and Russell Wilson had a conversation about what they can do. This is what they came up with:

It is also important to note that the Seahawks took a day off from practice to ensure that every single player on the team was registered to vote. This issue is one that will not be going away and I am happy that my team is committed to making a difference in this world in a time when change is needed.
