Russell Wilson earns NFC player of the week honors
By Lee Vowell
Russell Wilson was great, is great and will continue to be great.
The Seahawks defeated the Falcons in week one of the 2020 season 38-25. Seattle didn’t do a lot running the ball. They didn’t need to. Seattle has Russell Wilson and Russell Wilson is great. In fact, he was so good in week one that he earned NFC Player of the Week honors.
This is strange since Russell Wilson seems to get no respect. He has never even earned an MVP vote in his career. So maybe Wilson got lucky? Obviously, I joke. 12s know full well how great Russell Wilson is. He has, for years, made the team better than the sum of its parts and will likely continue to do so.
But at least this season, Seattle seems to have put several very skilled players around him. Greg Olsen came in this offseason. Josh Gordon was re-signed but Gordon hasn’t yet played because of suspension. This means as good as Russell Wilson was in week one, he actually might be better as the season goes on.

Russell Wilson has help
It does help that Wilson has very good wideouts already in D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and had Will Dissly too. But Wilson proved in week one that even if Seattle doesn’t run well, or even commit to running the ball, he can easily win games for them.
While this shouldn’t be a surprise, maybe it was somewhat of a revelation to coach Pete Carroll who tends to like a more conservative approach. With Wilson, he needs to not be so conservative. And the team will be better if they let Russ cook.
Maybe and finally this will be the year that Russell Wilson not only gets an MVP vote but actually wins the MVP award. This will cement his already likely Hall of Fame career. He is clearly off to a great 2020 already.
