Seahawks keeping Pete Carroll well beyond 2020 is right thing to do
By Lee Vowell
There is a report that the Seahawks are working on a long-term deal with Pete Carroll.
According to CBS Sports, the Seattle Seahawks are trying to work out a deal with head coach Pete Carroll to keep him in Seattle “well beyond” 2020. If true, this is the absolute right and best thing Seattle could do with its head coach position.
Pete Carroll has been the most successful coach in Seahawks history. He has won the most games (101 and counting), was the head coach when Seattle won the franchise’s only Super Bowl (2013 season), won the most playoff games (10) and most importantly, has led the longest period of time when Seattle has been a playoff-caliber team.
Carroll’s teams have made the playoffs in 8 of his 10 seasons. If Seattle makes the playoffs again in 2020, that would be 9 out of 11. Mike Holmgren is next best when he coached Seattle between 1999 and 2008 but Seattle missed the playoffs four times in those 10 years and was fading at the end of Holmgren’s tenure – the team went 4-12 in Holmgren’s last year.
Seahawks even better in 2020?
Seattle is not fading at all currently in Carroll’s 11th season. In fact, Seattle might be on the upswing again. In 2020, Seattle should have a very good offense and their best defense in several seasons. The team is capable of a deep playoff run.
Plus, one of the most important things in the NFL is a great pairing of head coach and quarterback. There is no doubt that Seattle currently has that with Pete Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson.
And if the Seahawks sign Carroll to a long-term deal that pairing should stay intact for at least five more years. That could easily be five more years of success for Seattle and happiness for 12s. Maybe Carroll will continue to be the NFL’s oldest head coach but he will also continue to be one of the most successful.
