5 edge rushers Seahawks could bring in to help replace Bruce Irvin
By Geoff Shull
The Seahawks had a couple of big blows in Sundays win against the Patriots. None were bigger than the losses of Marquise Blair and Bruce Irvin.
The Seahawks won a nail biter on Sunday night against a surprisingly stout Patriots squad. The game was an offensive showdown, Russell Wilson vs Cam Newton. Its no surprise Wilson came out on top. However, the sweet smell of victory was somewhat overshadowed by two big injuries that occurred.
It has been reported that both Marquise Blair and Bruce Irvin have ACL injuries. Both players are expected to miss the remainder of the season. Blair, who played mainly in the slot, will be replaced by a mixture of Ugo Amadi and Tre Flowers. Whereas Irvin will be replaced by either Jordyn Brooks or Cody Barton.
I am all for getting both Brooks and Barton time on the field. However, with Seattle also getting hit with an injury to Rasheem Green, they truly need more of an edge rusher than a strongside linebacker. This brings me to the meat and bones of this article.
I think between Jordyn Brooks and Cody Barton the obvious run plays and coverage will be good to go. Where Bruce Irvin will really be missed is in pass rushing. That honestly was one of the biggest reason Seattle signed him. Neither Brooks nor Barton has a lot of experience in this.
Brooks has the skill set to become a stout pass rusher. He just isn’t refined yet. I would feel a lot more comfortable keeping him out there on run plays and letting a veteran rush the passer. So, let’s go over the 5 players Seattle could target in free agency.
