5 edge rushers Seahawks could bring in to help replace Bruce Irvin
By Geoff Shull
Player 4: Mychal Kendricks
Say what you want about Mychal Kendricks tenure in Seattle but he did one thing very well, rushing the passer. Kendricks would offer the most upside in terms of pass rush, coverage and run defense. So, he would be the most complete of all the options thus far.
Kendricks also has a strong familiarity with the team, their locker room and the playbook. Given this is a midseason acquisition. It would make a ton of sense. My only worry with this is that Seattle will simply crown Kendricks the starter.
I really want to see Barton and Brooks get more time on the field. If Kendricks comes in as simply a third-down specialist, I would be thrilled. Let me show you why this makes sense in terms of pass-rushing.
Year Pass rush attempts Pressure rate Sacks
2017 40 32.5% 2
2018 11 36.4% 2
2019 57 17.5% 3
Kendricks was highly regarded by the Seahawks and the rest of the league because of his athleticism. He is a free agent because of his injury. He is now fully healed. Between his pressure rate and Jamal Adams (55.6% so far this season), Seattle could force pressure from the second and third levels, via blitzing.
This seems to me like the most logical solution to their current dilemma.
Suggested contract: $2 million base with incentives that could push to $2.5 million.
