5 edge rushers Seahawks could bring in to help replace Bruce Irvin
By Geoff Shull
Player 5: Michael Bennett
Ok, Ok I get it. Michael Bennett has a very strong personality and has the fan base turned off. He has had issues with several other organizations and he has recently retired. However, let me remind you of a couple of things.
First, he wants to retire in Seattle. I have zero doubt in my mind he would come out of retirement to finish in Seattle if he could. One last hurrah if you will. Second, he stood up for Russell Wilson when the rest of the defensive locker room were going at him. Third, he is more than open to a mentorship role. He would be a perfect mentor to LJ Collier, they play a similar game.
Fourth, he is a perfect plug and play at both the 5-tech and 3-tech. Fifth, he is simply a producer. His pressure rate is consistently between 9% and 12%. He can play the run and play the pass. He can play inside and out. He had 4 sacks and 8 tackles for a loss in just 9 games last year.
Finally, Seattle is trying to win it all this year. They spent big bringing in Jamal Adams. They traded for other secondary key cogs in Quinton Dunbar and Quandre Diggs. They kept their veterans around instead of going young. They want it all this year. You can feel it.
There is always risk and reward with any signing. This would be one of those times that the reward to me outweighs the risk. The Seahawks need pressure to come from the defensive line. With one of the two LEO’s going out in Bruce Irvin and Rasheem Green dealing with an injury, this is not a time to mess around. Worst comes to worst, cut him if he causes problems. No harm no foul.
Suggested contract: Veteran minimum with incentives to push to $2 million.
