Free agent defensive lineman Damon Harrison will reportedly visit the Seahawks next week.

Damon “Snacks” Harrison is a massive human being. He doesn’t get the nickname Snacks because he is consistently eating salads. Harrison likes to eat but he is also really good at eating up blocks and running backs. For years, Damon Harrison has been one of the best run-stuffers in the NFL. And the Seahawks are bringing him in for a look next week, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

What Damon Harrison won’t do

What Damon Harrison won’t fix is the pass rush issue Seattle is having. Seattle has three sacks in two games but two of them are from safety Jamal Adams. Harrison, as great as run defender as he is, doesn’t get much pressure on opposing quarterbacks. He has 11 sacks and 24 quarterback hits in eight seasons.

Harrison is 31 years old so age isn’t an issue. Conditioning might be. Harrison admitted to not staying in great shape last year with the Lions as he did not like playing there. He will likely be more motivated to be in good condition this season as he wants to play for a winner. But Harrison did also not take part in training camp and after a year of not being in good shape, how quickly can he get in NFL-level condition?

What Damon Harrison will do

The great thing for the Seahawks if Damon Harrison signs in Seattle is that the run defense seems to have improved this season and Harrison makes it that much better. Between 2013 and 2016 Harrison was the highest-graded defensive tackle run-stopper in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

He was still pretty good in 2018 when he had 81 tackles combined between playing with the Giants and Lions and had 9 tackles for loss. Plus, Harrison will be a rotational player and limited snaps should keep him fresh.

The bottom line is that bringing in Harrison would be great as he is a good player and helps make the defense better. But he doesn’t fix the Seahawks glaring need at pass rush. Seattle sign Damon Harrison and then maybe Clay Matthews too.
