Seahawks final injury report week 9: No Chris Carson again
By Lee Vowell
The Seahawks will be without their top two running backs against the Bills in week 9.
The Buffalo Bills aren’t great at stopping the run in 2020. But once again in week 9, the Seattle Seahawks will not have their top two running backs. Chris Carson (foot) and Carlos Hyde (hamstring) are both out. Both backs missed Seattle’s week 8 victory over the 49ers and both will miss this week as well.
The big question is whether the Seahawks can win again without them. San Francisco was a massively injured group itself and Seattle didn’t need Carson and Hyde as much as they might this week. While the Bills defense may not be as statistically as good as in recent seasons, they are still pretty good against the pass. In the last three games, they rank 9th in the NFL in passer-rating-against. (For the record, Seattle is 22nd.)
Carson and Hyde being out means DeeJay Dallas will likely be the focal back for Seattle. He wasn’t perfect in week 8 but he was exciting. Maybe with a week of experience, he will be even better. Tavis Homer and maybe even Alex Collins (seriously!) will be the backups. In other words, Russell Wilson will need to be great again.
Others out
Cornerback Shaquill Griffin (hamstring) is also out. This might be worse against the Bills than the 49ers as Griffin missed last week too. But Buffalo has better receivers than the 49ers because Buffalo will have all their receivers, like Stefon Diggs, healthy. In his stead, Tre Flowers, who has had one good game this year, will need to be solid and Quinton Dunbar will have to play through two full games healthy.
Defensive end Benson Mayowa will miss the game too as he did against the 49ers. I am not sure Seattle counting on another victory without Carson, Hyde, Griffin and Mayowa against a better team in week 9 than they played in week 8 is a good thing but that is the feeling I get. Seattle might think they can rest players on the verge of being able to play and come out with a victory.
Mike Iupati and Ugo Amadi will miss week 9 too but their backups seem capable of filling in at nearly their level.
In!
On the positive side, safety Jamal Adams will play and that, along with having Carlos Dunlap on the field for the first time, should mean the Seahawks defense is in good shape. So while Seattle’s offense might be a bit hampered, the defense is theoretically in the best shape it has been all season, even without Griffin and Mayowa.
