Russell Wilson grades: Seahawks quarterback off again week 10
By Lee Vowell
Russell Wilson seemed off again in week 10 and the Seahawks lost.
Hi, 12s. There are a lot of schools of thought about Russell Wilson. To start 2020, he was the best player in the NFL. In three of the last four games, Russell Wilson has not been sharp, makes un-Wilson-like plays and Seattle loses. This is a bit unfair to Wilson. He shouldn’t be 70 percent of the reason Seattle wins or loses because when games truly matter late in the year Seattle should have reasons for hopes of winning besides whether one singular player plays well or doesn’t.
But this is where we stand currently with the Seahawks. And in week 10, a 23-16 Seattle loss to the Los Angeles Rams, had Wilson played better and made better decisions, Seattle likely wins. No, the defense wasn’t great but it was good enough. Seattle should be able to score more than 23 points in a game and win.
Wilson had 3 interceptions through the first five games of the year. All Seahawks victories. In the last four games, three Seattle defeats and one win, Wilson has thrown for 9 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. This is bad and this is not anything of a trend where Wilson can continue to play this way and Seattle make the playoffs. The Seahawks will miss the playoffs this season if Wilson continues to be mediocre even after starting the year 5-0.
Russell Wilson’s iffy decision-making continues
The problem is Russell Wilson continued his trend in week 10 of making dub decisions. His first interception came on a play just outside the red zone when Wilson could have easily run for a first down as he had scrambled out and had lots of yards to pick up untouched and then forced a pass. The throw was against Wilson’s forward motion to a receiver that was never clearly open. It was weird. And bad.
Wilson was picked off again in the second half but on a better catch by the Rams defender and not as obviously as stupid of a decision. Wilson also fumbled a snap that was low but he should have fallen on. He needs to think better during games than he has and he has done this in the past.
For the first time this year, Russell Wilson did not throw a touchdown pass. And he didn’t come close. Wilson didn’t target D.K. Metcalf very much when he needed to and played things safe. Until he made a few stupid plays and un-Russell Wilson-like plays.
Is Wilson hiding an injury? From all accounts, he isn’t. But unless he plays to more of his normal level, Seattle is in trouble. Maybe this is unfair to Wilson but he accepts this responsibility and wants it. For better or worse, how Wilson goes, so go the Seahawks. Lately, that’s been bad.
