The Seahawks will get Rashaad Penny back after missing an entire calendar year with a knee injury.

The Seahawks have let Russell Wilson cook quite a bit this season and while that worked out really well early in the season, it feels like it has been a while since Seattle’s offense worked really smoothly and easily. (And let’s not count week 14 against the Jets because the Jets are not a real NFL team.) But Seattle can still run the ball and now will get Rashaad Penny back.

Entering week 15 with a 9-4 record but having gone 4-4 in their last 8 games, the Seahawks have a big question to answer. Should they still let Russ cook or get back to pre-2020 levels of a run-pass mix?

Seattle will now have three relatively healthy and potentially very productive running backs available: Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and Penny. To beat Washington the Seahawks will need to run the ball as Washington is really good against the pass. Carson should be fine, Hyde is healthy but less productive and Penny, well, who knows?

For a running back to come back from a serious knee injury and expect great things immediately is usually not a good thought. Thankfully, Seattle can ease Penny back a bit as they already have Carson (who may be better than Penny anyway) and Hyde. This is good for Penny and the Seahawks.

Rashaad Penny’s try-out

In week 15, if Penny can get four to five carries and do anything with those opportunities is a good thing. To expect Penny to come back in his first week back since a week 14 injury in 2019 and make game-changing plays is a bit much.

The biggest question about Penny is what he can contribute in week 16 and beyond this season and then into next year. Carson is a free agent after this season and, I think, must be re-signed. But if he isn’t then Seattle will need Penny to be good in 2021. So starting in week 15, Penny will be trying out to be Seattle’s lead back next year and into the future. If he can’t produce, Carson needs to be the lead back for several more years.
