Seahawks 2021 draft: 5 left guards that could replace Mike Iupati
By Lee Vowell
Seahawks round 2
Trey Smith, Tennessee
Trey Smith would be much better much more well-known if he had not had to suffer a couple of things in college. First, he had issues with blood clots that caused him to miss a bunch of games after having a great freshman season. Secondly, he played on not-good Tennessee teams and was not well-coached per SEC standards.
But the 6-foot-6-inch and 320 pound Smith has lots of talent and projects as a guard on the NFL after playing mostly tackle in college. In fact, the biggest issue he has is the blood clot problem, not talent. Plus, the Seahawks brass showed in the 2020 draft they aren’t afraid to take a Volunteer when they chose edge rusher Darrell Taylor in the second round.
Aaron Banks, Notre Dame
Notre Dame had great overall talent along its offensive line in 2020. Banks already has NFL size at 6-foot-5-inches and 330 pounds so gaining pounds isn’t going to be an issue. Banks is a very good run blocker (important as the Seahawks are likely to get back to running the ball more next season, for better or worse) and Banks is solid in pass protection.
Banks, according to Walter Football, is projected to be chosen between rounds 2 and 4 in the 2021 draft but if Banks has a great combine, he will likely be pushed up and out of the draft range Seattle currently has.
