Time to keep the upside train going forward and sign an exciting prospect at the tight end position.

Seattle needs to pass on adding another aging tight end and instead go for a player who has immense potential. There is a lot of rumor circulating that the tight end will be a key need in free agency.

There are also rumors that Seattle will not shy away from big names when it comes to adding talent for this position grouping. The two most logical targets are Gerald Everett and Jonnu Smith. Seattle chose the Benz over the Honda in this mock off-season.

Seattle signs Jonnu Smith: 4 years, $32 million ($8 APY).

Jonnu Smith is a breakout candidate. He possesses elite athleticism that helps him create separation with relative ease. He is the perfect player to run seams up the middle for Russell Wilson to use as a safety net.

Smith is only 25 years old and is still looking forward to hitting his peak. This is perfect. Another player to sign long-term that’ll peak at the same time as DK Metcalf, Curtis Samuel, and Damien Lewis. Help the offense continue to improve for today while increasing the chances of maintained dominance into the future.

Cap Hits:

  • 2021: $4.25 million.
  • 2022: $7.25 million.
  • 2023: $9.25 million.
  • 2024: $11.25 million.

Smith is the exact type of athlete Seattle needs. During the draft process, he placed between the 80th to 95th percentile for the 3-cone drill, broad jump, vertical jump, and 40-yard dash. An athlete to help open up the middle of the field.

Previous effective cap space: $25.1 million.

Cost from signing: $4.25 million.

New effective cap space: $20.85 million.
