Russell Wilson says Seahawks must be unapologetic to win it all
The Seahawks 2021 training camp is in full swing, and to no surprise, QB Russell Wilson is in full soundbite mode. Here’s some of what he had to say today about the mindset needed to compete for the title.
I had a bit of luck today, as I caught LaDainian Tomlinson’s interview with Russell Wilson on the NFL Network. Now, some of you faithful 12s may not have access, so out of the immense goodness of our hearts, some excerpts herein. Plus I’ll try to figure out exactly what the DangeRuss one means by “unapologetic”.
First, props to Tomlinson for not going down the whole ‘were you really going to ask for a trade’ path to hell. LT does ask the Hawks QB how training camp has been going so far. Wilson replied, “DK has been amazing; Lockett; Carson as good as it gets; the line has been really tough.” The only O-lineman Russ singled out is newcomer Gabe Jackson. He added, “It’s been good to have the fans back at practice every day. It’s been really cool for us.” Of course, Number 3 would give the 12s a shoutout.
Russell Wilson says all the right things – and one more I think I love
Regarding the changes under new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron: “It’s all West Coast, we got a lot of similar thoughts and ideas. We’ve been able to do a lot of great things over the past several years. We want to be able to keep a lot of that good stuff but also bring a little bit of change; change of pace, change a look here and there.”
Wilson added, “Gerald Everett, he’s a really talented player too. Add him to our football team, he’s been great. He’s been looking phenomenal out here. He can really get open. It’s been fun for us…passing the ball, running the ball… we want to have the versatility to be able to do it all.”
LT then asked, “What is the mindset… to get back to where you want to get to, and that’s competing for a Super Bowl championship?” Damn right, LT, that’s always the goal for the Seahawks.

Here’s where we get some really interesting insight into the mind of Russell Wilson. “I think the bottom line is you gotta be unapologetic. You know? Unapologetic. You’re just going for it. It’s tough to breathe sometimes when you’re at high altitude. I think that for us, and for me personally, you gotta keep going, you gotta keep believing, you gotta climbing. I think that’s really where we’re at. Unapologetic about it. I think that’s the mindset that we have.”
Okay, so…it sounds like Russell Wilson, despite being DangeRuss, and Mr. Unlimited, and one heck of a quarterback, actually does feel pressure at times. “It’s tough to breathe sometimes when you’re at high altitude”. Wow. Who knew the guy ever broke a sweat? Okay, on some of those throws, yeah, we knew – but still, that’s an interesting admission.
What I really want to know is, exactly what do you mean by unapologetic, Russ? I mean, the Seahawks are typically good sports after they stomp mudholes in their opponents. But I’ve never seen them apologize for it. Perhaps Wilson means the Hawks will go full Deadpool in 2021 and give maximum effort in every game. That would be a nice change, as there’s always a game or two when they appear to have never left the team bus. I’m not complaining; most teams in the league have half a dozen of those.
As a motto, “Unapologetic” isn’t quite as spiffy as “Always Compete”. For one, it’s a bit ambiguous. For another, it doesn’t contain the head coach’s name. Yeah, we see you working, Pete Carroll. Regardless, I’m down for whatever Russell Wilson says. As he closed his interview (of course), Go Hawks!
