4 Seahawks to watch in preseason game 1 against the Raiders
By Lee Vowell
Darrell Taylor
Seahawks fans have been waiting to watch Taylor in action since Seattle took him in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Taylor was taken to be an edge rusher but was dealing with a leg injury he suffered in college and missed his entire rookie year.
Now Taylor is going to be more of a hybrid edge rusher/linebacker. This is OK because this is exactly what he did at the University of Tennessee. Taylor will be playing SAM linebacker officially, K.J. Wright’s former spot, but unofficially and more importantly, Taylor will likely be used a lot more to chase quarterbacks than cover tight ends.
Preseason games are obviously good for teams to choose who makes their final rosters but it is also good for players who haven’t played in a bit to shake off some rust. Taylor is going to make the Seahawks roster, clearly, but he also will be playing his first NFL snaps against another team.
No, the game doesn’t count in any real win-loss context – Seattle could win by 50 or lose by 50 and while 12s always want Seattle to win, a loss doesn’t really matter – but the game should matter more to Taylor than other players. He’s likely ready to show what he can do and Seattle’s coaches clearly want to get glimpses of how much he can help the Seattle pass rush in 2021.
