Some good Seattle Seahawks news for your Friday
By Lee Vowell
There is some good news from the Seattle Seahawks on your Friday before preseason game two. Some could affect the 2021 season. First, players who didn’t play in preseason game 1 are likely to play in game two. Rashaad Penny anyone?
We will likely get a small taste of who Pete Carroll thinks will make the team this year early in the game against the Broncos. The last you get in the game the more you are likely to see players fighting for roster spots. But the first quarter or two will be golden.
The biggest question is how well Seattle starts the game. I don’t care if it’s subs or first-teamers, the first half against the Raiders in preseason game one was embarrassing. Just show me some heart and a whiff of the scheme this week and I will be happy.
Three Seahawks bits of happiness for your Friday
Colby Parkinson might be OK
While at first it was feared that tight end Colby Parkinson would be dealing with another long-term issue with a broken foot (he suffered one last offseason), 12s learned that Parkinson would not require surgery. In fact, Parkinson could be back in just a few weeks.
Tight ends will be very important in offensive coordinator Shane Waldron’s system and the more talent the better. Parkinson has had a good training camp and could be a breakout player in 2021. He’s a huge and unique target for the Seahawks to exploit.
Russell Wilson is hopeful about Duane Brown
Russell Wilson doesn’t make the contract offers to fellow players, of course, but his input is clearly – and must be – felt by the Seahawks brass. He needs his left tackle. No offense to rookie Stone Forsythe but Russell Wilson needs Duane Brown.
Wilson said he is hopeful Brown will sign an extension and be back soon. He needs to be. A lot rides on Brown deciding to protect Wilson’s blindside this year.
Richard Sherman is still a free agent
Finally, the Seahawks still need a very cornerback. Yes, Sherman is dealing with some off-the-field issues. But maybe Sherman still wants to play football and maybe football – just being involved – helps Sherman understood who he is overall. This may not be the normal way but maybe Sherman interprets things differently?
The fact of the matter is that if Sherman wants to play then the Seahawks should sign him. Seattle needs a good cornerback. Sherman is a good cornerback. And if Sherman does play with the Seahawks he at least would still be close to home.
