3 Seahawks that disappointed in win versus Broncos
By Lee Vowell
Ahkello Witherspoon
While Witherspoon wasn’t as bad as Flowers was in the Seahawks first preseason game, he still got beat a couple of times. One was on an early Broncos drive when Denver went for it on fourth-and-five and Denver receiver Jerry Jeudy ran a crossing pattern where Witherspoon could simply not stay with Jeudy who easily caught the ball and ran for 35 yards and set up Denver’s first touchdown.
Witherspoon, and Seattle’s cornerbacks overall, need to be a lot more physical. Seattle used to use the length and size of its corners to play more press coverage which meant throwing off the timing of receivers near the line of scrimmage by the corner being physical with the receiver.
I realize Witherspoon doesn’t have the talent that Richard Sherman has. Most corners don’t. But Witherspoon needs to use his 6’2″ and 200 pounds to his benefit and not try to rely solely on speed. He isn’t good enough for that.
I guess, if anything, Tre Flowers looked a bit better against the Broncos than he did against the Raiders and was more physical. Flowers and Witherspoon are battling for the starting spot opposite D.J. Reed (who hasn’t played yet this preseason) and neither looks like they will actually be very good as a starter in 2021. But against the Broncos, Witherspoon looked worse. Maybe next week against the Chargers both Witherspoon and Flowers will be decent.
