Three Seahawks who must perform well in final preseason game
By Lee Vowell
Penny Hart
Hart has looked very good in training camp but has not been healthy enough to play in the first two preseason games of 2021. The receiver actually has a history of minor injuries and this has to be taken into account when a team makes up its regular season roster and has an idea of who they can trust to be available most Sundays.
Assuming D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, D’Wayne Eskridge and Freddie Swain make the team that might leave only one or, at most, two more receiver spots. There is a group of three or four Seahawks currently battling for those potential last two spots.
While Seattle’s coaches seem to like Hart, players like Cody Thompson, Cade Johnson and Aaron Fuller are also doing a few good things in preseason. Fuller could make the team as a punt returner and was a good one at the University of Washington. Thompson also is a potentially very good special teams player and Carroll likes guys who do things in the scheme of the offense and defense and also play on special teams.
Hart’s biggest competition might come from Johnson, however. Undrafted out of South Dakota State but a very productive receiver in college, Johnson has led the Seattle receivers in receptions this preseason with 7. He looks sure-handed and has a lot of quickness. As a pure receiver, he might be better than Hart. But Hart needs to play versus the Chargers and do well in order to stay on the team most likely.
