What if Russell Wilson is very good but ultimately not good enough?

Wilson is the best quarterback in Seahawks history. But Seattle has never had a quarterback that has been one of the bigger reasons that Seattle has made a Super Bowl. Seattle has made three championship games in franchise history and not one of those games is because the quarterback was so great.

Wilson was the quarterback in 2013 and 2014 when Seattle went to back-to-back Super Bowls but there were bigger reasons for Seattle making that far than Wilson. Seattle had one of the best defenses ever and Marshawn Lynch was at running back. Wilson was good too, but he wasn’t leading the team the way he has to now.

In fact, Wilson is so good that even after the Seahawks transitioned to a Wilson-heavy offense and had a not-good defense Seattle made the playoffs. So Wilson is good enough to get Seattle to the postseason but he isn’t good enough to win many games once there. Other QBs like Aaron Rodgers are.

Seattle is a better team with Wilson at quarterback but a few years ago he started forming a bad habit on third-and-longs to look for the big play instead of trying to just get enough yards. Against the Titans in the second half, and especially overtime, Wilson was making low-percentage throws and Seattle’s offense was exiting the field far too quickly.

Maybe Wilson has reached his ceiling. I like Wilson. He’s a very good quarterback and a good person. But he is aging and has taken a lot of hits over his career. There might be a tough decision to make concerning the future of the franchise after this year and whether Seattle needs to trade Wilson and rebuild for the next years.
